John Parke (c. 1800 - c. 1898) was born in Kingston, Jamaica, around 1800, the third son of William Parke of The Thickets, Jamaica, and his wife, Eleanor Crosse, the daughter of Samuel Baldwin Crosse of Jamaica. His early education took place at a school in Lancashire before he crossed the threshold into higher education. On May 6, 1819, at the age of nineteen, he was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, subsequently matriculating in the Michaelmas term of 1819. During his time at Cambridge, he distinguished himself intellectually and socially by becoming a member of the elite and intellectually rigorous secret society known as the Cambridge Apostles. He completed his studies at Trinity College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1823.

Following his graduation, Parke pursued a career in the law, a path he had already begun preparing for during his undergraduate years. He was admitted to the Inner Temple on February 1, 1821, formally entering the Inns of Court to train as a barrister. While genealogical records such as Burke's Landed Gentry traditionally focused on the primary heirs—noting only one son alongside "with other issue"—Parke's own trajectory placed him firmly within elite intellectual and professional networks of nineteenth-century Britain.

Beyond his formal academic and legal credentials, Parke’s life intersected with the homosocial and homooriented circles characteristic of the Cambridge Apostles during the early nineteenth century. Membership in the Apostles provided a lifelong network of profound, intimate intellectual companionship among men, a sphere where emotional and romantic intimacies frequently flourished alongside philosophical debate. Parke lived to an exceptional age, passing away in 1898 at approximately ninety-eight years old, bridging the late Georgian era through the height of the Victorian period.
